Located just 14 miles to the west of Charlotte and close to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the community of Belmont is growing as a choice for those who want a suburban lifestyle close to the city.
Belmont has beautiful forested areas and hills surrounding a historic downtown. Lake Wylie and the Catawba River also provide waterfront for the community. As far as suburban communities go, Belmont is a relatively small one. It is home to just over 15,000 people, and residents appreciate the small-town feel and the close proximity to the city. In addition, the city has a low cost of living, which is another perk for residents.
Several neighborhoods are appealing to people buying a home in Belmont. Abbington Woods, located on the city’s northern end, has 50 homes, many of which are single-story. In the city’s southeast sector, the Linford Park community is family-friendly and has high safety scores. Its close proximity to a local elementary school makes it popular. Charlotte is working to build a new light rail line that runs between Matthews, into Uptown, and over to Belmont by the end of 2030. This 25-mile route will be called the Silver Line, making it easier to get to the city from Belmont. Though it is not quite in development yet, plans are underway. Adding a light rail may improve the city’s walkability score, as access to the city will no longer require a vehicle.
Belmont’s housing market is a competitive one. In February of 2023, the average days on the market were 69, and the median sales price was around $325,000. This average was lower than the same point the previous year, but the sales price does not account for the size of the homes sold. Based on square footage, prices are on the way up, as the average sale price per square foot was up 2.5% over the previous year.
When considering a community to purchase a home in, the quality of the schools is an important conservation. Those with children want to know they have good schools to send their kids to, while those who do not understand that quality schools improve property values. Education is important to the community of Belmont, and it has several highly-ranked schools. It is also home to Belmont Abbey, a private Montessori college ranked the best in the state for its undergraduate teaching program.
Belmont has schools that rank high for math and language arts. South Point High School is in the top 10% of schools in the area, serving nearly 1,000 high school students. Stuart W. Cramer High school is another top-rated school for older students. On the middle school level, Belmont Middle School is an excellent choice, with top marks for math and reading. Elementary students can go to Belmont Central Elementary School, which is in the area’s top 20% of schools.
Though Belmont is known for its forests and waterfront areas, it has plenty of entertainment options. In addition, the historic downtown, with its brick sidewalks and historic buildings, has plenty of dining venues and bars for residents to enjoy.
The Bottle Tree is considered the best overall restaurant. It has an extensive list of cocktails and dishes with international flavors. In addition, diners appreciate the large outdoor patio that lets them enjoy Belmont’s pleasant climate.
If you’re looking for a fine dining experience, consider Heirloom. This restaurant seems rustic but serves elegant three-course meals with a farm-to-table flair that diners appreciate. On the other hand, if you need something affordable but tasty, look at Cherub’s Cafe. It has comfort food and reasonable prices.
When you want to go out with friends for drinks, consider Sammy’s Neighborhood Pub. You can get a burger and beer and watch your favorite team on the wall of televisions. The Lodge Tavern and Tap and Jailhouse Spirits & Lounge are also popular places for drinks in the community.
Belmont provides the perfect mix of quiet, suburban living and big-city amenities close at hand. Its dining, education, and housing market all make it appealing.
