More Americans Are Moving as the Economy Improves

As the housing market and job outlook improves, Americans are starting to move once again. During the recession, as housing prices were in a slump and unemployment very high, people tended to stay where they were. There isn’t much motivation to relocate when times are tough and opportunities scarce.

Now, however, things are brightening up and we are seeing lots more movement.

In 2011 and 2012, for example, about 3.5 million moves were recorded. This is the highest it’s been since before the recession in 2006-2007. If current trends continue, we are likely to see even more people moving over the next few years.

Where Are People Moving To?americans-moving-to-the-southeast

A couple of decades ago, there was a great deal of growth in the southwest, such as Texas and Arizona. The big news right now, however, is the growth of the southeast. Both of the Carolinas are very popular right now. The Charlotte metro area is one of the most attractive areas for people looking to relocate.

What is so attractive about the southeast? The climate is mild compared to many other regions. People from the northeast or midwest can travel south to escape harsh winters. The economy and housing markets in particular are improving. At the same time, the southeast still offers plenty of real estate bargains, which is another very attractive quality.

How to Lessen the Stress of Moving

While moving can be exciting and a chance to seize new opportunities, it can also be a hassle. Taking your family and packing up all your stuff is a major step, and it takes plenty of preparation. If you are planning to move in the near future, there are some points to keep in mind to keep the process as stress free as possible.

* Choose a Trustworthy Mover – Only deal with licensed and insured movers. You should check with organizations like the Better Business bureau before hiring someone. You can also ask for recommendations from friends who have moved.

* Get Multiple Quotes – As with any service, it pays to shop around and get quotes. On the other hand, you shouldn’t necessarily go with the very lowest quote. If one mover’s rates seem abnormally low, you should be suspicious. You also have to make sure you know exactly what is included in the quote.

* Book well in Advance – As more people are moving, this means that movers are busy. This is especially true if you move in the summer. Think about moving at a less popular time, or make sure you reserve your place as soon as possible.

* Moving Can be Hard on Kids – It can be difficult for kids to leave behind their old school and friends. Try to make it as easy as possible for them. One way to do this is to bring along some familiar and favorite items. This will make the new place seem less strange to them.

Moving is Natural for Americans

Americans have always been a mobile group of people, always seeking out new horizons. Right now the southeast is drawing lots of people seeking jobs and real estate bargains. This is a good time to consider a move. If you plan everything out, you can minimize the stress and focus on all the new possibilities!
