“An area of north Charlotte has been ranked 11th on the list of the 25 most dangerous neighborhoods in America.
The list was produced by neighborhoodscout.com, a website which provides neighborhood-level statistics on crimes, schools and housing for the real estate industry and prospective home-buyers.
The survey’s organizers say the rankings were based on FBI crime statistics and data from more than 17,000 law enforcement agencies across the United States.
The Charlotte area in the rankings is actually several neighborhoods along North Tryon Street — bounded largely by North Graham Street, Atando Avenue, Brevard Street, and the Brookshire Freeway. It includes the Lockwood and Tryon Hills neighborhoods, along with part of Highland Park.
According to the website, annual crime statistics show 108.94 crimes per 1,000 residents. There is a 1 in 9 chance of being a crime victim in the area, neighborhoodscout.com said.
That compares to the No. 1-ranked area on the worst neighborhood list — West Lake Street in Chicago — whichy has 257.72 crimes per 1,000 residents and a 1 in 4 chance of being a victim of crime. Second was Cleveland’s Scovill Avenue, with 165.56 crimes per 1,000 and a 1 in 6 chance of being a victim.
Yvonne Neal, who says her family has lived in the North Tryon area for a decade, told WCNC-TV, the Observer’s news partner, that she has seen a decline in the community.
“I’m gonna be honest with you — when I first got here, it was quiet, peaceful, beautiful,” Neal told NewsChannel 36. “After so many years, it’s not likeable now. I used to like it. Now I’m not comfortable with it.”
Much of the area is in the North Tryon Division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, and the latest crime statistics (through August) show criminal activity has dropped more than 10 percent in the past year. But that division has the second-highest crime rate in CMPD, trailing only University City.
Two other Carolinas neighborhoods are in the top 25 — Echo Avenue in North Charleston, S.C. (13th); and East 21st Street in Winston-Salem (16th).” ~ Source: CharlotteObserver.com
